I am looking at buying a 2001 Kubota L2600DT with 40 hours on it. I intend to mow my 10 acres with it. I am told that it does not have a live PTO and that I need one for mowing.
Why is that? Can't you just spin the blades up to speed in Neutral and then put it in gear and go? Why are so many people telling me to get a live PTO?

The blades will not start spinning until you release the clutch. You cannot go from nuetral into gear with the blade spinning. You have to put the tractor in gear, engage the PTO, and then release the clutch. The blade will start spinning at the same time you start moving. That is why a 2 stage clutch is nicer to mow with. ....

You will also be a lot safer in the future when running any attachment on that tractor that may develop centrifical force (rotary cutter)--The 2 stage clutch or Live PTO is best because they will not allow these type implements to push the tractor during operation. Running a belly mower or finsih mower on a tractor with no live PTO will get old after a while because every time you push the clutch in the mower will slow down or stop. --Ken Sweet

The problem mentioned before is that without a Live PTO, the implement drive shaft is directly connected to the drive wheels of the tractor. If you get a bush hog or other heavy rotary cutter up to speed it acts like a flywheel. When you step on the clutch, the "flywheel" effect of the mower will continue to push you forward. This can be dangerous.

There is a device called an over-run clutch that will allow you to stop quickly. It will deliver power to the bush hog, but releases and free-wheels if the tractor is stopped. This solves the danger part of the problem.

But, for convenience, the Live PTO is worth the money. As the other posters have said, it offers advantages and you will like it better. Unfortunately, this option may cause you to buy a larger tractor. Decisions/decisions... ....

The flywheel effect and pushing the tractor was only an issue on older machines as far as I know.(example the old 8n ect.)
The later model non-live PTO tractors have the over running clutch built in the tranny.
I mow with a 1978 JD 850. No live PTO,no external over running clutch, and the mower or brush hog coasts to a stop without pushing the tractor.
But the mowers do stop when the clutch is depressd.

I have a 4100 gear tractor without independent PTO. It works just as described. I do a lot of mowing with my tractor. Would it be easier with an independent PTO, yes. But my tractor does the job well for me. If you have a lot of start and stopping to do while mowing, then you'd be happier with an independent PTO. If you have wide open spaces and doen't do much start and stop, you'll not really miss the independent PTO. IMHO ....
